Chlorine is a chemical element with the symbol Cl and the atomic number 17. The high reactivity of chlorine led to the use of chlorine as a bleaching agent (e.g. paper industry). It is also an important basic chemical in the production of polyurethane and polycarbonate. Chlorine is used as an inexpensive disinfectant for drinking water because the hypochlorous acid produced attacks viruses and bacteria.
